Dr. Rux meets Viktor Frankl

Derrick, your humble servant here first met Viktor Frankl through his book "Man's Search for Meaning" when this writer was an undergrad at the University of Wisconsin - Madison.  He was in his second year; this writer expected to get an A grade in each and every course.  Well, he did not; he was going to quit!  Before he could quit, this writer met with a counselor, who gave him, this writer, a copy of Frankl's book, asked me to read it, and had me return to discuss it.  The counselor used logotherapy to help your humble servant here reframe his grade as a lesson in reality.  The reality is I am not and cannot be perfect in all areas of life!  I learned that when we flip coins, statistically, some will be "heads" and some will be "tails."  We cannot bat 100% all of the time, so be gentle with, on yourself.  In short, the counselor used the book and its message to help your professor think through his experience and gain a positive outcome from it.  Now, when a student gets upset about a grade, very often this writer will repeat the flipping the coin example.  If we expect perfect in all we do, we are living in a false reality.  I later used Frankl's autobiography "Night" when I was a high school history teacher.  Yes, Frankl is wise.  Good job in discussing him.  Dr. Rux
