Sylvia, your discussion about nurturing the human soul recalls the work of famed psychoanalyst Erik Erikson below:
"Erik Erikson's Stages Psychosocial Development
What are the most important stages in a person's life? It all depends. Using Erik Erikson stages of development as a model for the stages of thinking and learning for children, you will notice in each stage there are opportunities for positive ego development as well as deficits in one's character, not only before a child reaches his 20's, but throughout life."

The first six years in life are especially crucial, for in them many of the basic neural connections that shape our personalities (souls) are or are not stimulated. These neural connections, foundations, or lack of them over time in our childhood and youth, shape our conscience, or soul. Your observations are totally consonant with Erikson. The challenge is to make sure such neural foundations are stimulated, connected in positive ways. Exactly. Dr. Rux
