Essentialism and Safety in Education
John, yes, sadly today basic safety is a top, if not the top, concern in education. In our town, the school board expelled a young man who got arrested driving from a school event with other students as passengers in the car. The parents of course protested long and loud; the school board stuck to its policies about consumption of alcohol at school events, and his driving to and from a school event, a football game, fell under this policy. Your humble servant here received a request to lobby for the return of the student; he flatly refused. Yes, I know the board chair, superintendent, other board members, etc., but safety rules; this writer has no time to be sentimental about rehabbing somebody. As stated before, your humble servant here is an Essentialist, who believes the first job of education is basic skills - and with this basic civilized behavior, the old work ethic, which rejects drunkenness. Its purpose is not to do social work. I am amazed that our local school officials have stood firm! Sometimes the news is good.
