Power of Examples

Kelly, yes, yes, yes, the power of example is decisive in shaping our ethical core, foundations.  Aristotle observed this when he said the key values in life are "caught" from examples" of the behavior of others around us, not "taught" through books and classes.  Of course it does not hurt to have classes, like ours, that help us to reflect on the wisdom of folks like Plato, Aristotle, and the Bible.  You were blessed to have the example of your grandmother.  Think of children whose examples are drunks and drug addicts and abusers.  You get the idea.  This is why it is crucial be careful about what children experience from adults around them.  Like you, the example of my father standing in the doorway to prevent a drunken neighbor from beating his wife, who was hiding in our basement, has stayed with your humble servant here.  This writer, too, will stand firm between those who seek to destroy and those who are unable to protect themselves.  Examples count.  Good job.  Dr. Rux
