Inside Outside Ethics
This is thoughtful, thorough, first-class. In particular, you underscore a basic principle in management science. It is this. People do not change their personalities when they come to work from home; they do not change their personalities when they come home from work. Therefore, somebody who abuses his spouse will be abusive on the job; the person who is abusive on the job will be abusive in other settings. Therefore, our ethical behavior on and off the job reflects our ethical character, our core being, and we do not fake this very long. A family member of this writer is short-tempered with his family; he was short-tempered on the job. The result was loss of job, family separation, and loss of friendship as well. Our ethics have roots in our personalities, our personal emotional makeups. We do not change such emotional makeups, also known as habits, easily, quickly, or convincingly if we are acting. Yes, as you observe, ethics flow from the inside, core, character of the person out, from his or her emotional makeups; it takes time, effort to change makeups. Keep up your good work. Dr. Rux
