Power of School Violence Threat to Motivate Administrative Action
Katie, this is a powerful ethical challenge. Do we report destructive behaviors to the proper authorities if our management does not, or do we sit back and let things finally explode? Here is how your humble servant would address this. He would remind administration of public fear of school violence today. Remind the big shots in the front office that if this student goes ballistic and gets violent they will be on the firing line with public opinion for doing nothing to curb it, which means expelling the student. This will get their attention. Link this case to school violence and you will get the attention of the desk jockeys, for it will explode on them if criminal investigation reveals non-action to teacher warnings about potential violence in the school. The politics of this is to leverage action by framing this situation in powerful language, terms that will scare the power structure to act. Yes, this is "street fighting," but sometimes we need to do it. Good luck. Dr. Rux
