Individual Vs. Group: Aristotle's Politics
Group 2, this is excellent. In a nutshell, as your professor likes to say, human ethics are a creative tension between the individual and society, the person and the group. You document this very well here in more detail (individual versus community and similar comparisons). Yet, we are adrift if we simply make the group supreme; we are adrift, too, if we simply make the individual supreme. We need both, healthy ethical individuals and healthy ethical societies. Ideally, as Aristotle noted in his Politics, the ultimate ideal goal is for the group, the society, his "polis," to facilitate and support the individual in his or her pursuit of ethical authenticity. In turn, authentic ethical persons reciprocate with ethical input into the working of the society. Yes, we need both. Sadly, we are in imbalance now. Good job. Dr. Rux
