Week Five Learning
Summary – February 2 – 8, 2014
What stands out from our work this week is our discussion of
safety and workplace violence. The
consensus – rightly – is safety must be the top, first concern in all
situations, especially educational ones.
We need not to belabor the school shootings.
For instance, your humble servant here is in Crystal River, FL, snow birding for three months. He attends a nearby Rotary club weekly meeting; one of its members is, no joke, the retired principal of Columbine H.S., CO, where the infamous shootings occurred. Nobody ever brings up this subject. The club members have manners and need not revisit this nightmare with him.
Your humble servant here, however, wants to share two personal stories of his experiences with fatal school violence. First, he was a Ph.D. student with Dale Breitlow. We sat together in class. Dale became a high school principal, and on December 1, 1993, a student at Wauwatosa (WI) West H.S. shot and killed Dale. This has helped to shape my view on this topic.
Also, your humble servant here taught professional ethics online for Upper Iowa University, 1999-2010. The course required students to conduct field interviews with practitioners about their professional ethics and challenges. One of my students interviewed John Klan, principal, Weston H.S., Cazenovia, WI. One week after the interview a student shot Klang to death. The online student, rightly, was crushed. Her interview with him, which she submitted to me, was one of his last professional acts. He had high ethical standards; murder was not the kind of reward that his conduct on the job warranted.
With reason, I have no mercy for such killers.
