Professional Conflict and Clash with Merit Pay
Yvonne, this is a very useful checklist as a guide to professional development. However, your humble servant here differs merit pay from professional development. Merit pay has its roots in results, and it is a throwback to the assembly line piece work, where workers on the line got paid for increased output. An industrial, factory model, in the opinion of this writer, conflicts with professional development. It assumes people work for money. In fact, professionals in education work for the intrinsic rewards of service to others. Good healthcare workers are similar. This does not mean we should abolish negotiations for pay. This writer in fact has been a member of two teacher unions, one in the USA and one in Canada, and he in fact has gone on strike, in Canada. Yes, your checklist provides professional guidance to develop professionals; this writer has problems with the whole notion of merit pay in the first instance. Thanks for listening. Dr. Rux
