I started my online ecuation career in 1999. My employer required training;
in my case, it was in effect a one-to-one tutorial with the remote trainer.
Therefore, what follows I cannot claim as original with me, but it is
crucial.
Trainer: When students start a course, one of the very first assignments,
questions is: How will you find the time to pass this course?
This forces the students "right out of the box" to engage with the challenge
of time management, which is key for online success, reflect on ways to meet
this challenge, and in answering how they intend to find the time create, in
effect, a "learning contract" with the instructors. If students answer this
question, in effect, they take responsibility for on-time performance and buffer
the instructors from criticism because the students fall behind with posting
assignments on time.
As we have discussed in our student retention team meeting, one of the
persistent themes in our evaluations is the challenge, issue of student time
management. My first online trainer was "street smart," for he put the crucial
challenge to student success right at the start of a course.
1. What is your name?
2. How will you find the time to complete our course
on time?
