Town and Gown

Jason, "town-gown" relations are as old as universities. "Gown" referes to the academic gowns that university folks once wore, since universities have their roots in religious foundations. In fact, when this wrtier was at the University of Dublin, he wore a traditional academic gown to class. As Dr. D.A. Thornley reminded us, "You are students, not butchers and candle stick makers." Sadly, he has passed away. Yes, the tension is historic, and the Dublin students had a tradition at the end of the acadmemic year to fight the dock workers! I did not do this. This annual rumble had its roots in ancient tensions between the town and students. What has changed?
