Shaun, your humble servant here believes in balance. Right now, however, research tells us that students more and more no longer gain basic academic skills. This in turn is helping to depress the value of degrees more and more. This writer is a philosophical Essentialist, which is hardcore skill mastery. If you have honed skills, moreover, you can train and retrain to keep pace with the economy as it changes. The person without basic skills is stuck in comparison.
