We do not toady to the lockstep of any political party. We value basic principles, not patronage, "For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world and lose his soul?" We create nothing new. We rediscover the "Permanent Things," often at great pain to ourselves and others. We also value logic, facts, and courtesy. Precision of language is one of the best antidotes to the mindless buzz words and slogans of political correctness that now poison our times. As the late Russian poet Boris Pasternak, who lived uner the iron boot of Stalin and wrote the popular story entitled Dr. Zhivago, which became a popular movie, observed, no dictatorship invites precision of language, for it unmasks its Orwellian debasement of language to stay in power. The perversion of language, a tool of logic, reportedly no longer occurs in Siberian labor camps of the
Stalin era. However, it seems to have taken root in North America. Unless we recover precision of language, we are going to end up in George Orwell's classic Animal Farm.
