Utilitarianism: Antidote to Wall Street Greed Poison
Victoria, overall, you stress Utilitarianism, the greatest good for the greatest number, as your guide to ethical behavior. Utilitarianism says we consider the needs of all stakeholders when we make decisions, act. This ethical stakeholder analysis aligns perfectly with the current trend in "systems thinking" in best management practices today. You evaluate the whole, not just a part, which also prevents you from making surprise enemies. We do not need bad surprises. Yes, we may not be able to make everybody in the system happy; at least we are aware of who the latent enemies will be. This protects us. Yes, your Utilitarian ethics reflect the wisdom of "an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure." Moreover, change management research tells us that people will follow us more readily if they see a benefit for themselves in the change, and if they trust you, the leader, to factor such benefits for all as best you can. Utilitarianism is the exact opposite of the self-centered greed that has put our country on course to economic depression. The Wall Street vampires are not systems thinking, Utilitarianism, or they would not have planted seeds of destruction for the system in which all of us must live. Do not give up on your Utilitarian approach to ethics. More than ever we need it here, now! Dr. Rux
