Uniters Not Dividers
Katie, thank you for this moving story about your own ethical journey. In particular, your emphasis on family and church resonate big time with your humble servant here. When this writer grew up, church was the center of our family life. It did not replace family life; it was a central part of it. When this writer was courting his wife, the decisive moment about proposing to her came when she and I were in her hometown in Wisconsin, Mineral Point, one of its oldest settlements, and the church bells rang to announce evening service. She said, "Let's join my mother and dad for worship." Right then, there, I knew she had the ethical wiring that would help us to love and support each other. Like you, this writer rates his church life as a key driver of ethics. Last night, for instance, he attended a men's spiritual retreat where we heard a guest speaker talk about what unites us as humans! It is so refreshing to hear somebody talk about how we are the same, not how we differ. The trouble makers who love to push "hot buttons" in us against others have way too much power in our society right now. As you have heard this writer say before, with Immanuel Kant, let's focus on what unites us as humans. Let's build on this! Dr. Rux
