Monica, this is fascinating. My great grandfather immigrated from Germany in the 1880's to the USA. He became a lumberman in the State of Washington, and when he had made some savings, he moved to Wisconsin where he bought a small farm, which is still in our family!
For him, owning property was his goal, because he was a landless serf, peasant, laborer on the estates of rich people in Prussia, the Northern part of Germany. For him, property, having your own home, farm was his dream, and he made it come true. He lumbered on the way to achieving his dream, and your information here provides more background on why he left the lumber camps to farm.
