Monica, this is fascinating. My great grandfather immigrated from Germany in the 1880's to the USA. He became a lumberman in the State of Washington, and when he had made some savings, he moved to Wisconsin where he bought a small farm, which is still in our family!
For him, owning property was his goal, because he was a landless serf, peasant, laborer on the estates of rich people in Prussia, the Northern part of Germany.
