End of Altruism in Recruiting Volunteers

I have done workshops on volunteer management and published articles on it.  Here is my advice.  When we deal with volunteers today more and more we are engaging in workforce development!   Yes, we must present our volunteer program as a way for the volunteer to gain new, valuable career skills, references, contacts, and knowledge.  Volunteers are not free; we must be willing to budget volunteer management time for them, which includes constructive the program to "give" to the volunteer, not just to "take."  In short, altruism is no longer enough.   In the tough job market, our best volunteer pitch is job training, support, positioning.  I am convinced this is the only way to go unless you are dealing with very rich, very retired people.  Dr. Rux
