Professional Limits
Kristin, this is an excellent "360" discussion of desirable ethical qualities for teachers. You "cover all of the bases" very well here. What deserves special comment is the relationship of teacher to student personal lives. Yes, it is okay to offer encouragement; this writer has found that it is best today to send students to university counselors, academic, social, career, etc. for guidance, rather than trying to untangle student personal issues. It is safer to stay out of such social work, guidance counseling, and stick to academics. For instance, if a student has financial aid issues, we ought to back off and let persons who have time, special expertise handle this. We cannot be all things to all people all of the time. Yes, there are limits to what we can do as teachers, professors. Respect them. Dr. Rux
