Aristotle: We are social animals.
Victoria, this is an excellent discussion of the growing social isolation that A.P. Boers analyzes. Your humble servant grew up in Portage, Wisconsin, a town of 7,000. In it, people knew their neighbors, socialized with them, and cared for them. Now, it is hard for this writer to accept life on a street where people ignore each other, have no interaction with each other, and live in toxic isolation. Aristotle observed we are "social animals." This means we cannot fully develop our humanity in isolation from each other. This means we cannot fully develop our ethical self in isolation from others. Yes, people are hungry for community, belonging, and we would be a happier country if we paid more attention to this need and how it would nurture ethical behavior. FYI This writer engages in politics to provide some of this social nurturing for himself and others. Dr. Rux
