Power of Honor
Sylvia, bravo! Yes, of what value is our name, our reputation? It is, as you suggest, "everything." With this your humble servant concurs. The late, great American historian Barbara Tuchman put it this way in 1984, shortly before she died, when on an interview show the host asked her what would fix America. She said, "Honor. Until America restores the concept of honor all is lost." In effect, you restate Tuchman here. This writer is old enough to remember when getting and keeping a "good name" as an individual and a family was at the top of the list of "musts."As my late father said toward the end of his life in the nursing home as people stopped to say hello to him in his wheel chair as they left the building's chapel service, "Isn't it nice to be a family of honor?" I saw a lifetime of moral, just behavior return to him as people took time to express respect to him. His son, your professor, very much wants this for himself always. Even the Mafia, in its twisted way, knows the power of "Respect" and "Honor" in its bloody dealings. Even they must trust each other, for as Plato observes, even robbers will not join a band of robbers if they think the others will hurt them. Long live honor! Dr. Rux
