General Charles De Gaulle, Free French Leader WWII

I once had the chance to be present in Paris, in 1964, when General Charles De Gaulle led a reunion of the French Underground at the City Hall.

Not a word was said.

He climbed the steps, stood at the top, in uniform, turned, faced the Resistance fighters, took off his cap, and they all sang the French national anthem, no speeches, only unity of voice, purpose.

It was one of the greatest expressions of patriotism to come my way.

This writer aches for such taste, dignity, honor for his country.

Instead, we have clowns.
